The MSA ALTAIR® 4XR is a professional portable four-gas detector designed to provide reliable atmospheric monitoring in hazardous and demanding working environments. This configuration simultaneously detects combustible gases at LEL, oxygen (O₂), carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrogen sulfide (H₂S), making it suitable for identifying a wide range of common atmospheric hazards.
The detector uses MSA XCell® sensors, designed to provide rapid response and reliable measurements. The four-gas configuration monitors LEL from 0–100%, oxygen from 0–30%, carbon monoxide from 0–1,999 ppm and hydrogen sulfide from 0–200 ppm. The high-resolution display provides clear readings, while visual and audible alarms alert the user when gas concentrations reach configured alarm levels.
Built for demanding professional environments, the ALTAIR 4XR features a rugged housing with IP68 protection and has been tested for resistance to drops and harsh operating conditions. The instrument can withstand multiple 1.2 m drops and incidental drops from up to 7.5 m onto concrete, helping protect the detector during everyday industrial use.
The rechargeable lithium-polymer battery provides up to 24 hours of operating time, with a charging time of less than four hours. The compact instrument weighs approximately 228–230 g, making it practical for continuous personal monitoring without adding significant weight to the user’s equipment.
The ALTAIR 4XR also incorporates features designed to simplify maintenance and compliance. The Bump LED and on-screen checkmark provide a quick indication that the detector has passed its required checks, while the instrument can be bump-tested and calibrated using the MSA GALAXY® GX2 automated test system.
Depending on the configuration, MotionAlert can detect when a user becomes immobile and InstantAlert allows the user to manually signal a potentially dangerous situation. These features can provide an additional level of safety when working alone or in hazardous environments.
The ALTAIR 4XR is suitable for a wide range of professional applications, including confined-space entry, firefighting, emergency response, oil and gas, construction, welding, plant maintenance and general industrial work. Its rugged construction and multi-gas monitoring capability also make it suitable for maritime and offshore environments.
The European version is available with an EU charger, and the detector is available in different configurations and sensor combinations. MSA notes that approvals depend on the specific configuration, part number and country, so the approval marking on the individual instrument should be checked before use in a regulated application.
Overall, the MSA ALTAIR 4XR is a robust and versatile personal gas detector for professionals who require dependable four-gas monitoring, long battery life and a durable instrument capable of operating in demanding environments.
