The Honeywell BW Solo NH₃ Standard 0–1000 ppm is a professional single-gas detector designed for continuous monitoring of ammonia (NH₃) in potentially hazardous environments. With a measuring range extending from 0 to 1000 ppm, this version is designed for applications where higher ammonia concentrations may need to be detected and monitored.
The detector uses an electrochemical ammonia sensor and provides a resolution of 1 ppm. The BW Solo platform supports Low, High, TWA (Time-Weighted Average) and STEL (Short-Term Exposure Limit) alarm functions, allowing the instrument to provide warnings according to the configured exposure and safety requirements of the application.
The BW Solo is designed to give the wearer clear and immediate warning when an alarm condition occurs. It provides audible, visual and vibrating alarms, with the audible alarm rated at approximately 95 dB. The 128 × 64 pixel backlit display clearly shows the current gas concentration, alarm status and other instrument information, making the detector easy to read during normal operation and in low-light conditions.
Easy to service and maintain
A major advantage of the BW Solo platform is its serviceable design. Unlike maintenance-free gas detectors such as the BW Clip, the BW Solo allows the sensor, battery and sensor filter to be replaced, helping extend the working life of the instrument rather than requiring the complete detector to be replaced.
Calibration can be performed manually or automatically using Honeywell IntelliDoX. The detector can also be configured with calibration and bump-test reminders, helping companies maintain regular inspection and testing procedures as part of their gas detection programme.
The detector performs self-tests of the sensor integrity, circuitry, battery and audible/visual alarm functions when activated, while battery status is monitored continuously. Users can also configure features such as latching alarms, peak/TWA/STEL reset functions and non-compliance indicators.
Data management & wireless functionality
The BW Solo platform is available with Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) functionality, allowing compatible wireless models to connect with Honeywell applications for instrument management and data handling. The detector can also communicate with a PC through IntelliDoX for instrument setup, data download and configuration.
This makes the BW Solo particularly useful for organisations managing multiple gas detectors, as routine calibration, bump testing, instrument configuration and detector records can be incorporated into a more structured gas detection management system.
Robust design for demanding environments
The BW Solo has an IP66/IP68 ingress protection rating, providing protection against dust and water ingress. The instrument measures approximately 70 × 67 × 36 mm for 1-Series sensor models and weighs approximately 103–116 g, depending on the installed sensor.
The standard BW Solo platform has a typical battery life of around 12 months, although actual battery life can vary depending on the sensor configuration, operating conditions and use of wireless functionality.
For the NH₃ sensor specifically, Honeywell lists a one-year warranty for the NH₃ sensor, while the applicable BW Solo detector warranty depends on the sensor series and configuration.
Approvals & certifications
The Honeywell BW Solo platform is supplied with a range of international hazardous-area certifications and approvals, including:
- ATEX: Sira 18ATEX2243 — Ex ia IIC T4 Ga / Ex ia I Ma
- IECEx: IECEx SIR 18.0058 — Ex ia IIC T4 Ga / Ex ia I Ma
- CE: CE 2460
- Inmetro: DNV 19.0109
- ABS: Type Approved 21-2143903-PDA
- CSA: Applicable hazardous-area classifications
- IP66/IP68: Ingress protection
- FCC / IC / RED: Applicable to wireless/BLE versions
⚠️ SOLAS / MED approval
This product is NOT SOLAS/MED approved.
This is particularly important for your marine customers. The BW Solo has ABS Type Approval, as well as ATEX, IECEx and other certifications, but ABS Type Approval should not be presented as equivalent to MED/SOLAS approval.
Therefore, the Honeywell BW Solo NH₃ Standard 0–1000 ppm should not be selected where MED/SOLAS approval is specifically required. Customers purchasing portable gas detection equipment for vessels should verify the requirements of the vessel, flag state, classification society and applicable regulations before selecting this model.

✗ NOT SOLAS/MED APPROVED
The Honeywell BW Solo NH₃ Standard 0–1000 ppm is therefore a professional, serviceable solution for continuous ammonia monitoring where a higher 0–1000 ppm measuring range is required, including industrial, hazardous-area and certain marine applications where SOLAS/MED approval is not a requirement. For vessels or applications requiring SOLAS/MED-approved portable gas detection, customers should select a suitable product from your SOLAS Approved Gas Detection category.
